house tour tuesday: the cabin

hi everyone!

welcome, to our little family cabin. while this is not Old Towne Orange, it is still in Southern California in our local mountains.

IMG_2073-002

this little cabin has a lot of history. at least to our family.

see, my great-grandfather built it with his own two hands in 1937. he had bought the land for ten dollars (yes, TEN dollars! what a steal! can you imagine if we could buy land today for ten dollars? WOW-za!).

IMG_2068

my great-grandfather was a contractor, so he used leftover materials and scraps to build the cabin. (i love that tidbit of information….a man after my own heart!)

IMG_2070-001

(this little black and white sign was a nod to his last name, which was also my grandmother’s maiden name. it has hung on the outside for as long as i can remember.)

IMG_2075-001

and though the cabin is small and quite rustic, it has made and stored many years of memories. when my great-grandfather became elderly, he passed it down to my grandmother, who will eventually pass it down to my dad and uncle and so forth. it has been threatened by forest fires a number of times, but luckily always escaped unharmed.

IMG_2398-002

when i was little, we would often pack the cabin so full of people that you could hear laughter echo in the valley behind it. my dad told me that once they had forty people come stay in this little one bedroom, one bath cabin.

IMG_2057

the grown-ups would always stay up late playing games (usually rummy) and the kids would talk or read comic books in the bunk beds (a memory so ingrained in my mind, it feels like yesterday).

IMG_2053

when i was little, my dad would tell me stories about how he and his friends would sleep on cots on the back porch if there were too many people and not enough beds.

IMG_2036

occasionally, pine cones would fall from the trees and make a loud CR-ASH through the forest. it’s a sound that strangely brings me a sense of nostalgia now.

IMG_2030

and the bugs. OH the bugs. we always have a bed check before you climb into the sheets. gross, i know, but necessary when you’re out in the wild. (no, we never have found a stink bug in our bed. just the occasional spider. ew. my father, however, is apparently not afraid of the stink bugs. i decided to take this picture  standing from the safe distance of the back porch.)

IMG_2201-001

(this painting was done by my great-aunt years ago. you’ll notice that there is a tree coming out of the porch. my great-grandfather built the cabin around it. for some reason, the tree was removed, but i can remember playing around it at a young age.)

the inside of the cabin, is similar to the outside: simple and rustic.

IMG_2193

the decor is a bit outdated and most of the furniture is left over pieces throughout the years from various family member’s homes.

IMG_2241

despite the dated decor, i love the simple details the cabin has….

IMG_2205

old door knobs, tongue-in-groove wood pine planking, and old family memorabilia like a quilt my grandmother made with her mother.

IMG_2231-001

throughout the small space, there are various quotes that have welcomed guests throughout the years. there are even guest books that have been filled with loving messages of the people who have stayed here. it’s so fun to read the words of past family members; some of which i never knew.

IMG_2248

the windows are all original from the 30’s. if you go up closely, you can see little bubbles that have formed and stayed in the window panes; a sign of their age.

IMG_2275-002

out of all of the cabin, i think the kitchen nook is my favorite. it holds the most memories for me, and also my first memory of the cabin. i’m not sure how old i was, but it was most definitely one of my first visits (from what i can remember). the entire table was surrounded (or more squished) with family members eating dinner. there must have been at least eleven people crowded around the table. there was laughter interspersed between the talking.

IMG_2260

after the dinner dishes were cleared from the table, the cards came out to play! i always loved to wash dishes at the cabin. such a strange delight because it does not have the same effect as when we are home. maybe it has something to do with the fact that doing the dishes at the cabin was always a family affair. you never had to do them alone. someone was always the washer and a few others were always the drier.

IMG_2287-001

while we were up at the cabin this last weekend, my dad mentioned that we should clean out some of the closets and cabinets sometime, because there might be some treasures.

IMG_2300-002

little did he know, that i would get to work right away (“sometime” seemed too far away). 😉

IMG_2307

so, i spent some time looking through the bedroom dresser and found some old long johns and slippers.

IMG_2304

not quite the treasure i had in mind.

IMG_2312-001

and then i remembered the hidden cabinet in the kitchen nook. it was where we kept all of the games and toys we used to play with when my brother, cousin, and i were kids.

IMG_2269

so, i started to pull out game after game after game. i had no idea there were so many, but some of them were from the 1930’s! the packaging alone is so cool!

IMG_2322

and then at the very bottom, i found these: old tootsie toy cars and trucks from the 50’s. most likely my father and uncle’s toys. my dad was pretty excited.

IMG_2337

so was this boy. he could hardly wait for me to take the picture of them, so he could start playing.

IMG_2078

so, although it may be small and rustic, i love this little cabin and all of its priceless treasures.

happy 4th: a family tradition

this year, we went back to an old family tradition of going to our family cabin for the fourth of July.

IMG_2387-002

we spent some time at Lake Gregory,

IMG_2363

swimming in the water and renting a paddle board to play on.

IMG_2386

i can remember going to this lake when i was little. we would have races swimming across. (side note: i totally tried to swim across again and while i made it…i completely freaked myself out. half way across, something touched my leg. it was probably just an overgrown plant or maybe a large fish. ick. whatever it was, i swam like i was going for the gold. and i might have busted a lung in the process, but at least i made it.)

IMG_2375

and we would take the paddle boards out to the middle of the lake and jump off (new rules are in place. that’s no longer allowed, but i was temped to try it for old times sake, anyways).

IMG_2046

we bbq’d and sat on the back porch, enjoying the mountain air just like old times.

IMG_2064

and practiced our Etch-A-Sketch technique. (my brother was always good at this, probably because of his techie computer brain.)

IMG_2083

then we ate a simple dinner, before we headed to Arrowhead Lake to see the annual firework show.

i’m a sucker for traditions and i’m thankful to pass them onto my son. hopefully, he’ll look back on his childhood and remember these simple memories fondly.

IMG_2131

hope everyone had a safe holiday and enjoyed the people that matter most.

transformation thursday: free curbside armoire

i realize that this post is coming a little early. and that it’s not actually thursday, but because of the holiday i thought i would post it anyways and enjoy my family tomorrow.

it seems to be (in my life) i am either really early or really late. never on-time.

one day i shall master that. or not.

until then, i thought i would share a little transformation my hubbs and i did on one of our free curbside finds.

IMG_1706

my hubbs was on his way to the grocery store on Sunday and found this sitting on the side of the curb. he quickly called me to ask if i wanted it. (smart man!)

so, he brought it home and my wheels instantly got to work.

IMG_1705

at first my hubby thought that he could just fix the door and then we could sell it. but, like most of our free curbside finds, i tend to fall in love and want to keep them.

it had great bones and i could tell it was well built, but you see, one of the doors was completely busted off. and though it probably could have been fixed, i had thought of a way we might be able to better use it.

i knew our house was a little too small for such a large piece of furniture. i also remembered that my son really needed a dresser for his clothes, since i had completely taken over real estate in his closet.

so, my eyes got big and i shot my hubby an all to familiar look that said, “i have a plan!” and he as usual, listened patiently and then went along with it.

here’s what we came up with….

IMG_1949

a dresser for our son’s room.

it fits perfect!

IMG_1953

it’s the right size, warms up the space with the natural wood tone, it adds a bit of rustic cowboy to his little boy space, and it was free!

and though it has a few rough spots, and a corner molding piece that is missing (my hubbs re-used the pieces from the top part of the armoire)…

i love it!

IMG_1964

and so does our little boy.

win/win!

happy 4th friends!

house tour tuesday: the fun house

happy tuesday, everyone!

welcome, to another tour of an Old Towne Orange home.

i’m excited to share with you all, a home that just makes me feel happy.

IMG_1879

when we first moved into our neighborhood, i was taking my son for a walk and walked by this house. to my surprise, someone called my name and when i turned around, standing there was one of my old students (from my first year of teaching).

IMG_1868

i was so excited to see that they were our new neighbors!

IMG_1881

now, when i was trying to think of what to title this post, a few names came to mind. the happy house. the colorful house. and then i decided that the fun house, was most appropriate. that’s not to say that i think it’s like a circus (although my friend, J, might feel like she lives in a circus at times because it is filled with bubbly, laughing little kids, puppies, a cat, and a guinea pig).

nope, instead this house is just plain fun. (i think you might agree)

IMG_1763

it is colorful, vibrant, and just happy. it breathes energy into me, every time i walk through the door.

IMG_1738

when i first toured the home a couple of years ago, the thing i noticed first and just LOVED was their brightly painted furniture.

IMG_1752

(they were the very first people to buy one of my oversized ruler growth charts. i have them to thank for starting that lil business. thank you!)

the space just oozes personality, which makes sense because the people that live in the home also ooze personality.

IMG_1765

they are cheerful, smart, warm, down-to-earth, and fun people.

they are also very real.

IMG_1755

when i first arrived at the house to take pictures for this post, my friend was a little nervous. (i’m calling you out J!) 😉

she was worried her home wasn’t clean enough, decorated enough, perfect enough to be shown on the blog.

IMG_1771

now let me just say, that i didn’t start out doing this weekly tour of houses, so that i could see perfect homes.

i’m not interested in perfect homes. sure, i love design and i love to see how people have decorated their homes.

but what i’m interested in are real homes.

IMG_1779

homes that are lived in. that show history.

IMG_1830

homes that tell me a story about the people that live and thrive inside.

IMG_1803

see, i think a home is more than just a place where we eat, sleep, and drink our coffee (the last being the most important, of course).

it’s a chance to express who we are.

IMG_1810

and how we see the world. or how we want our world to be. (in some cases, it’s a bright orange kitchen with ikat curtains! how fun!)

IMG_1788

it’s an opportunity for us to show what we believe in.

IMG_1800

and what matters most to us.

IMG_1794

our homes show the details of our lives.

IMG_1795

it’s how we put our spaces together that show what kind of people we are.

IMG_1838

maybe your home is neutral because you like it to be quiet (figuratively speaking). maybe it has striped curtains or ruffled pillows. or dishes in the sink or laundry on the table (or maybe that’s just my house?). or your grandmother’s old hand-me-down furniture. maybe it’s all blue because blue makes you feel peaceful.

IMG_1847

or maybe it has every color from the rainbow because bright colors just makes you feel happy. or maybe it’s not decorated at all and that’s okay.

IMG_1853

(btw, they found, yes, found this awesome yellow cabinet just like this in their back alley. what a find!)

whatever your home is, it is your very own. to let perfection go. to be real.

whether you are renting or owning, it is the place where you get to tell the people that visit, this is ME!

IMG_1856

so, whether your home is quiet, simple, elaborate, colorful, neutral or just plain fun.

IMG_1862

be proud of your space. and remember that people usually want to come back not because you have shiny, clean floors, but because of how you made them feel.

IMG_1859

or because you have cute little puppies running around that lick your toes.

IMG_1907

so, thank you, B family for inviting me into your home. for being you. for being real. and, of course, for being fun!

IMG_1884

ps. my son wants to come back to your fun house, again, soon! 😉

Eikon Home: my favorite Old Towne Orange store and a {july giveaway}

today was like most Sundays: thank and praise our God for another day, laundry, clean the house, grocery shop…..wait….isn’t it supposed to be rest on the seventh day?

okay, so we did manage to do a little shopping in the circle and stop by my favorite store in Old Towne Orange.

IMG_1660

Eikon Home is one of the cutest little stores. i have no problem finding something i like.

IMG_1661

even before i enter the store, i am oohing and ahhing over their chalkboard signs, asparagus ferns, and cheerful yellow door.

IMG_1635

once i’ve entered the store, it’s like a wonderland of treasures for my eyes.

IMG_1649

there are so many unique items.

IMG_1650

some are old and some are vintage inspired.

IMG_1668

it has been my go-to place for special gifts for family and friends.

IMG_1644

or even little trinkets for our home. (wouldn’t these be so cute in a little boy’s room?)

IMG_1639

and apparently i was starting to feel the dog days of summer because i started to notice all of the cute lil dog figurines in the store.

IMG_1647

yup, Eikon is a great store. i have been a fan for years. and i was especially a giddy fan when they started to carry my oversized ruler growth charts!

IMG_1665

they were a popular item and sold out quick! not to worry, they have been freshly re-stocked.

IMG_1667

they even made their appearance in the store front window. (i’m such a proud mama!)

IMG_1663

so, if you are looking for a fun gift for a special someone, or maybe yourself, or maybe a giant oversized ruler growth chart….

go check out Eikon Home. (and don’t forget to put yourself on their mailing list for special offers)

transformation thursday: man’s catch-all

my hubby recently said that our house was a little fluffy. he likes it, but it’s just fluffy.

i wasn’t sure how to de-fluff our house, so i went right out and looked for new pillows for our couch that were not fluffy, but i came home with ruffled linen pillows.

oops. de-fluffy fail.

i tried. i really did. our house was built in 1913, which i guess classifies it as a victorian (?) and so, it kinda just decorates itself.

well, yesterday i noticed that some of his non-fluffy, man stuff was starting to accumulate in places that were not its home. (do you do that, too? give things a ‘home’ and if it’s out of its home, then you find it a home? please say yes.)

i remembered that i had that old desk sitting in our garage that i found on the side of the road (those that follow my Instagram, may remember?).

IMG_1592

the desk was in really bad shape. the top of the desk had come completely loose, the bottom was falling off. plus, it looked like it had sat outside and been beaten up by the elements.

the drawers, however, were in great shape!

so, i took one of the drawers, cleaned it up and then sprayed it with some spray paint.

IMG_1602

(Rusteoleum heirloom white is one of my favorites!)

we had some scraps of wood in our garage, so my hubby cut down a few pieces and then used his nail gun to attach them to the drawer.

IMG_1598

(i decided to spray the wood pieces in this light blueish green color.)

of course, i sprayed it after it was nailed into the drawer, which got all over the heirloom white that i had sprayed. i had to go back over all of the inside and outside with more paint. i decided to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in ochre. then i lightly distressed the shelves. (rookie mistake)

and this is what i came up with….

IMG_1630

a man’s catch-all!

IMG_1623

i added some plaid wallpaper that i found at the thrift store and wrapping paper from TJ Maxx.

IMG_1629

now everything has a home,

IMG_1608

and my man has a spot in our otherwise, very fluffy house.

(thanks, for putting up with my fluff babe! love you. xoxo)

house tour tuesday: the surprise bungalow

i have a surprise bungalow for all of you.

actually this house was a surprise for me, too!

see, i walked next door on Sunday to go check in on my neighbors and see how they are coming along on their house.

remember, the big yellow?

IMG_1459

it is now the big green!

it is looking gorgeous, inside and out. i can’t wait to share all of the fabulous details the new homeowners have poured into this house. it’s going to blow your mind. at least it did mine. just a few more weeks and this beauty will be done!

in the meantime, my sweet neighbor called up her old neighbor (who also happens to live in old towne Orange) and asked if i could feature her house.

she said, “yes.” so, today we drove over and i took a peek.

oh holy moly. i think my jaw was in the locked open position for the whole tour.

IMG_1581

it’s in a part of old towne that i dearly adore. most all of the houses are nicely fixed up and the pride of ownership is very prevalent.

IMG_1579

even their garden was beautifully done. (i think i need to take some lessons from them on how to have a green thumb)

IMG_1577

when we first got there, i was greeted by the homeowners on the front porch. i instantly felt comfortable by the husband and wife duo.

IMG_1572

we chatted for a bit and then they welcomed me into their home.

IMG_1541

i was amazed by the amount of space i saw when i first entered. from the outside it looks like your classic old towne Orange craftsman. as soon as i walked through the door, i could see the amount of time and love that had been poured into it.  not only was the house meticulously restored, but it was made into a better version of itself!

IMG_1539

the living room was full of beautiful textiles

IMG_1542

and old furniture (look at that old scrubbed pine coffee table! drooling!)

IMG_1544

the more we entered, the more i loved it. of course, it wasn’t too hard to love, since the wife and i have similar taste. i loved all of her decorating choices.

IMG_1556

even her vignettes around the house reminded me of something i would have in my home (or actually have…hello, eggs in a nest!).

IMG_1547

what i noticed most about the home was that it had a cheerful, bright feeling about it. it invited you in and made you want to stay awhile. it completely reflected the same feeling of the homeowners: bright, cheerful and inviting!

IMG_1549

as we made our way through the house and into the kitchen, the wife and i started talking about design (a subject i could go on and on and on about and i do …i love it so much).

IMG_1521

to my surprise, she loved it just as much.

it’s rare for me to find someone who not only loves design, but loves to talk about design so much!

i was thrilled!

IMG_1532

we had a great time talking about the different materials she used and our mutual love for repurposing old things.

IMG_1529

while we were talking, she shared how she wished she had chosen to go into the design profession.

IMG_1523

my heart almost burst. i felt like i had met my long lost twin.

see, i had that same wish and it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that i decided to go for it; to follow that dream.

IMG_1534

i told her about some of the design jobs i had gotten. how i used to feel so nervous about going into a field that is so competitive and wondering if i had what it takes (she shared those same concerns).

IMG_1538

we continued to walk through her house, talking and sharing while i admired her style and her very obvious talent in decorating (and crafting! look at those awesome pom pom flowers! i want to make some.)

IMG_1557

while we were talking, she mentioned she had thought about wanting a blog. a design blog, but she wasn’t sure if she should or where to start.

“um. yes. yes, you should! i will help!” i replied.

IMG_1561

and that’s when i stopped taking pictures.

i thought it would be best for her to share the rest of her home on her blog (there are lots more amazing spaces!). her new blog. her new design blog. because she has what it takes and i think she should go for it.

it’s never too late to follow a dream.

as i was leaving, this caught my eye…so, i took one more picture.

IMG_1568

my heart was full and happy.

(ps. thank you G & D for inviting me into your home. i was excited about getting to see a beautiful home, what a surprise to also meet two beautiful souls! and G, i’m looking forward to working together. lets chase those dreams!  it’s not too late.)

diy chalkboard art

chalkboards are everywhere right now. it’s definitely a hot trend and one i was glad to jump on board with!

i love the utilitarian look of them and how they can fill a room with a message.

after seeing a post on how to make one, on one of my favorite blogs (check it out, this girl has style! mysweetsavannah.blogspot.com), i decided to give it a go and make one myself.

IMG_0817

to my surprise, it was pretty easy. it took about an hour.

here’s what you’ll need…

IMG_1517
1. chalkboard (you can purchase pre-made chalkboard in the lumber section at Home Depot, and have it cut to any size. or just use a piece of mdf or any piece of wood and chalkboard spray paint by rustoleum)
2. chalk
3. chalk eraser or cloth
4. tape
5. ball point pen
6. chalk pen (optional)

IMG_1472

no. this does not mean put salad dressing all over your chalkboard. it’s to fill all of the microscopic holes with dust powder, so that when you go to erase it for the next time, it doesn’t leave the message behind. i have no idea where or when i learned that or if that is even correct. that’s just what i’ve been telling myself. In some cases (or most), your message might still be visible. oh well, i season my mine anyways, because i like the white, cloudy, used look it gives the chalkboard. (feel free to skip this step. it’s a personal preference)

IMG_1584

to season your chalkboard, use a piece of chalk on its side and rub back and forth, covering the whole surface. then wipe the chalk away with an eraser or cloth.

IMG_1484

(clearly, i forgot to take a picture of my original piece of paper. oops.)

there are many printable quotes on the internet. Pinterest is a great source. i found mine on the blog: mysweetsavannah.blogspot.com. or you can create your own with a program like Microsoft word, or any word processor.

once you’ve decided on the best quote, print it out on regular 8×10 computer paper.

IMG_1485

i took my quote to Kinko’s and asked for a ‘drafting copy.’ you could also take it to Staples, Office Depot, any place that has a big copy machine. pretty much just ask them to enlarge it to the size you would like. it might be the easiest to measure the size of the chalkboard and give the salesperson those measurements and they can enlarge it to that size.

IMG_1486

using the chalk on it’s side (just like when we were seasoning the chalkboard) rub chalk all over the back of the paper. you won’t be able to see the chalk, but just keep rubbing and make sure to cover all of the letters.

IMG_1488

after you’ve rubbed chalk all over the back side of the paper, flip your quote over and tape it to the chalkboard, quote side up.

IMG_1491

(side note: do you notice the cute lil’ footprint in the middle? my son managed to photobomb this pic!)

take a ball point pen and trace the letters of the quote. making sure to press down firmly. this step will transfer the quote to the chalkboard.

IMG_1493

peel back the paper a little, to make sure the quote transferred. it will be faint, but still visible.

IMG_1504

after all of the quote has been transferred, use a piece of chalk or a chalk pen and trace the quote on the chalkboard (jonesdesigncompany.com has a great post on different types of chalk!).

and viola’! you’re done and you have a great piece of chalkboard art to display in your home, or give as a gift, or for a party.

clearly, the uses are endless.

IMG_0817

have fun!

come have some coffee with me tomorrow morning as i tour another cute little old house in old towne orange for house tour tuesday!

house tour tuesday: our home

i know i hinted last week about being ‘green with envy’ or ‘tickled pink,’ for our house tour this week, but you’ll have to stay tuned. i also said i would actually post ‘house tour tuesday’ on tuesday, not wednesday. but see, i haven’t gone to bed yet, so it’s still tuesday to me. what can i say, i’m a night owl!

Anyhoo, (haha..get it? i’m an owl. ok. moving on), i thought i would give you a glimpse of our home. it’s only about a minute long and i only have two rooms to show you (because these were the two that were clean).

and though i still have quite a few projects to do and painting to finish, i thought i would go ahead and share our space and the place we call home.

i don’t think i’ll do much talking tonight. just let you look around. before i do, i want to add, that our home has been created using either hand-me-downs, thrift store finds, Craigslist finds, consignment store purchases, or side of the road finds.

it doesn’t take a lot of money to make a house a home. just some patience, a little creativity, and a hot glue gun! (heh)

with that being said….welcome, come on in.

thanks for stopping by! come on back (when the rest of the house is clean 😉

over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go

actually, there are no rivers or woods on our way to grandmother’s house. unless, you’re counting the Santa Ana river, which is kind of a river.

who are we kidding, not really. it’s more of a sewer river. ew.

instead, we take the 55 to the 91, exit Lakeview and head North.

when i was little i used to say we were going to the ‘country’ when we were headed to my grandmother’s.

she lives in Yorba Linda. it’s hardly country, but the properties are spacious and there’s a lot of dirt, so i guess in my mind that qualified for country.

it’s ‘the land of the gracious living.’ or so it says on the sign as you enter the city.

i think that is about accurate.

IMG_1119

really, it’s everything a kid could ask for in a place to grow up, but when i was little, i thought it was kinda boring.

there were no friends to play Barbies with and the boys (my brother and his friends) never let me play on the tractors with them.

IMG_1209

(i bet this boy would love to take his mama for a ride on the tractor!)

to entertain myself i would find the key to my grandma’s little shack and pretend it was my home (it used to be my dad and his brother’s playhouse when they were little).

IMG_1040

i would sit inside with my dolls and think about how i would decorate it.

i loved how tiny it was.

when i was in my late teens, i would go over to my grandmother’s house two or three times a week. i loved hanging out with her.

we would pick lemons from her trees and make homemade lemonade.

IMG_1094

i liked to wear my overalls (what? it was the 90’s. totally acceptable) and go into her grove

IMG_1115

and pick avocados and make fresh guacamole.

IMG_1117

(side note: they’re usually much bigger than this, but avocado season is over. these buds are just starting to grow for next years crop.)

sometimes, i would help deliver the avocados to the nearby restaurants.

(this is my grandma and step-grandpa’s old truck. isn’t that the cutest?!)

other times i would help my grandmother with her garden. (it’s a wonder i didn’t kill all of her flowers. i did not inherit her green thumb!)

through the years, there have always been two areas of my grandmother’s home that i love best.

the first is her red barn.

there are treasures both outside

(this used to be the water trough for the horses. waaaaaay before my day.)

and inside

and up in the loft of the barn.

my grandmother likes old stuff, too! (can you tell?)

she also likes to collect stuff (genetics are powerful, aren’t they! 😉

the second area i love is her basement (yes, this is in California and yes, that is rare). it was the mecca center for fun and is full of cool treasures!

IMG_1178

whenever we had family gatherings here, we would head to the basement to play pool.

(this is a map my great-grandpa made and would mark off the places he traveled with little red pins.)

IMG_1145

(my grandfather was a commercial pilot, so he and his family traveled often.)

i loved and still love to admire her collections.

IMG_1152

she loves coffee. (yup, she’s definitely my grandma.)

and though she was never a smoker, she loves these colorful little tin cans.

IMG_1158

yup. my grandma is pretty cool, if you ask me. she even has a directors chair that says, “hustler” on it.

IMG_1160

i think out of all of her collections throughout her life though, her most favorite are her family.

we love you, GG.

kisses.
